Audition for Level 5 Orchestra:

 

Eligibility to apply for Level 5 Orchestra:

Students must currently be in Level 4 Orchestra or be invited to audition by Ms. Gonzalez or Mr. Yucra.  Students must be at least in seventh grade at the time of their audition.  If accepted, placement into Level 5 orchestra is for the following school year.  Placement is also contingent upon successful completion of Level 4 Instrumental Techniques.

 

Auditions will take place in March.  Late auditions will not be accepted.

1.   Technical proficiency - 

  1. Consistently good intonation and rhythmic accuracy

  2. Appropriate playing posture

  3. Intermediate vibrato technique

  4. Shifting into at least 3rd position with accuracy

  5. Reading fluently in chromatic first position, basic third position, and required clefs

 

Violins -

  • Perform a two-octave major and melodic minor scale of the juries choosing (possible keys: C, G, D, A, F, Bb, Eb)

  • Vivaldi A minor Concerto First Movement from Suzuki Book 4

  • perform Trott 9

  • demonstrate vibrato

  • sight read a grade 4 passage

  • By the end of the school year students must also be able to perform Vivaldi Concerto in A minor Third movement and the Bach Double Violin 2 part

 

Violas - 

  • Perform a two-octave major and melodic minor scale with arpeggio of the juries choosing (possible keys: C, G, D, A, F, Bb, Eb)

  • Vivaldi D minor Concerto First Movement from Suzuki Book 4

  • perform Trott 9

  • demonstrate vibrato

  • sight read a grade 4 passage in alto clef and a grade 2 in treble clef

  • By the end of the school year students must also be able to perform Vivaldi Concerto in D minor third movement and Telemann Viola Concerto Second Movement

 

Cellos - 

  • Perform a two-octave major and melodic minor scale with arpeggio of the juries choosing (possible keys: C, G, D, A, F, Bb, Eb)

  • perform Marcello’s Allegro from Sonata in E minor from Suzuki book 4

  • demonstrate vibrato

  • sight read a grade 4 passage

  • Successful completion of Level 4 Instrumental Techniques

Basses - 

  • perform wwo scales with arpeggio in major or melodic minor selected by the jury.  One will be a one-octave scale with arpeggio from these keys: C, D, Bb, Eb.  The other will be a two-octave scale with arpeggio, with no displacements, from these keys: G, F, and A

  • perform La Cinquantaine from Suzuki Book 4

  • demonstrate vibrato

  • sight read a grade 4 passage

  • Successful completion of Level 4 Instrumental Techniques

  2. Maturity and work ethic -

  • overall behavior (independently and in a group)

  • assignments turned in on time

  • ability to work independently

  • be a role model to other students

  • reliability (attendance and punctuality)

  • evidence of a routine of home practice

  • grade point average of 2.5 or higher as required in the High School Contract by the school board for competition in events and participation in field trips.

Audition for Level 6 Orchestra:

Eligibility to apply for Level 6 Orchestra:

Students must currently be in Level 5 Orchestra or be invited to audition by Ms. Gonzalez or Mr. Yucra.  Students must be at least in eighth grade at the time of their audition.  If accepted, placement into Level 6 orchestra is for the following school year.

Auditions will take place in March.  Late auditions will not be accepted.

  1. Technical proficiency -

    3. Mature vibrato technique

    4. Shifting into at least 3rd position with high accuracy

    5. Reading fluently in chromatic first and third positions, and required clefs

 

Violins -

  • Perform two scales with arpeggrios.  One will be a Major three-octave scale and arpeggio from keys: G, A or C .  The other will be a melodic minor two-octave scale and arpeggio from keys: D, F, Bb, Eb

  • perform Allegro from the Handel Sonata (pages 28 and 29) of Suzuki book 6

  • perform Trott 12

  • demonstrate vibrato

  • sight read a grade 5 passage

  • Successful completion of Level 5 Instrumental Techniques

Violas -

  • Perform two scales with arpeggrios.  One will be a Major three-octave scale and arpeggio from keys: C, D or F .  The other will be a melodic minor two-octave scale and arpeggio from keys: G, A, Bb, Eb

  • perform Arioso from Suzuki book 6

  • perform Trott 12

  • demonstrate vibrato

  • sight read a grade 5 passage including treble clef

  • Successful completion of Level 5 Instrumental Techniques

 

Cellos - 

  • Perform two scales with arpeggrios.  One will be a Major three-octave scale and arpeggio from keys: C, D or F .  The other will be a melodic minor two-octave scale and arpeggio from keys: G, A, Bb, Eb

  • perform Allegro Appassionato from Suzuki book 8

  • perform Popper etude No. 1 from measure 12 to the first note of measure 41

  • demonstrate vibrato

  • sight read a grade 5 passage including tenor clef

  • Successful completion of Level 5 Instrumental Techniques

Basses - 

  • Perform two scales with arpggios.  One will be a Major two-octave scale and arpeggio, with no displacements from keys: A, Bb, or C).  The other will be a two-octave melodic minor scale and arpeggio, with no displacements from keys: E, F, or G. 

  • perform Concerto in F Major by Capuzzi from Suzuki Book 6

  • demonstrate vibrato

  • sight read a grade 5 passage including treble and tenor clef

  • Successful completion of Level 5 Instrumental Techniques

  2. Maturity and work ethic -

This is weighted VERY heavily as Level 6 are the representatives of MAS Orchestra and Miami Arts Studio across the district, state, and nation.

  • overall behavior (independently and in a group)

  • assignments turned in on time

  • ability to work independently

  • be a role model to other students

  • reliability (attendance and punctuality)

  • evidence of a routine of home practice

  • grade point average of 2.5 or higher as required in the High School Contract by the school board for competition in events and participation in field trips.
